BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team took it to the College of Saint Benedict Blazers Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 victory. After the Blazers took the series opener by a 3-2 score on Thursday night, despite Bethel outshooting CSB 47-19, the Royals fired away again on Saturday but this time converted six times on 39 shots. The Royals loss to CSB on Thursday was the first such loss since the 2008-09 season.
Kaitlyn VanTassel scored Bethel's first goal of the game and the only score in the first period at 17:33 with assists from
Bri Stafne and
Sophie Kendall. The Blazers tied the game up 1-1 at 8:13 in the second period. The Royals were determined not to let the Blazers hang around anymore though as Bethel scored the next five goals of the game to open up a 6-1 lead. The first three goals came within a three minute span late in the second period.
Sarina Goos scored first with assists from
Kirsten Olson and
Briita Nelson.
Wendy Roberts scored on a power play with
Natalie Simons and Nelson. VanTassel then added a shorthanded goal for the Royals off an assist from Stafne to make it 4-1 going into the third period.
Abby Felton scored just 1:13 into the third with an assist from Olson who then got in on the scoring action herself. Olson's score was the last for Bethel at 4:53 in the third with assists from Goos and Nelson. The Blazers were able to score twice in the last six minutes of the game to make the final score closer at 6-3.
Bethel improves to 6-8-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the MIAC. CSB fell to 2-11-1 and 1-6-1 in the MIAC. The Royals will take on the University of St. Thomas next weekend, hosting UST on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Bethel University Arena.
