Last year's matchup, which resulted in a 40-34 overtime win for Carthage in Arden Hills, could have gone either way. The Red Men began the game with a pair of field goals, but the Royals stormed back with three touchdowns to claim the 21-6 lead with 8:52 remaining in the second quarter. Carthage cut into the deficit with a touchdown and missed PAT before BU closed out the half with their fourth score of the game. Despite leading 28-12 after the halftime intermission, Bethel allowed the Red Men to score three straight touchdowns, including the last, which came with 1:38 left in regulation. The Royals tallied the equalizer with 25 seconds remaining, but a missed PAT sent the game into overtime where Carthage stopped BU's offense and scored a touchdown on their first possession.
