WINONA, Minn. - The Bethel University women's soccer team made the trek south Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Saint Mary's University Cardinals and came away with a 2-1 victory. The Cardinals struck first but the Royals answered with goals in each half and did not allow the Cardinals any other shots on goal in the game. In all Bethel outshot Saint Mary's 12-3.
Maggie Sipe scored the Royals first goal after being set up by
Sarah Gielau to tie the game at 1-1 in the 39th minute. For Sipe the score was the seventh of the season, tied for the third most in the MIAC. Gielau then gave the Royals the lead with a score of her own ten minutes into the second period. With the Royals stifling defense the goal held up as the game winner.
Bethel improves to 4-4-1 overall and picked up their first MIAC win to move to 1-3-0. Saint Mary's is now 0-4-0 in the MIAC and 5-5-0 overall. The Royals will turn their attention to the College of Saint Benedict Blazers for a Saturday matinee at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
