ASHLAND, Wis. - The Bethel University men's soccer team picked up their first victory of the 2017 season with a 3-1 win over the Northland College Lunberjacks. The Royals and Lumberjacks were tied at 1-1 going into the second half but the Royals capitalized on their opportunities in the second half, scoring twice for the final margin. Bethel outshot Northland by a 18-3 clip for the game while garnering 12 corner kicks to just three for the Lumberjacks.
Connor Miller and
Kevin Hintz connected to put the Royals on top in the 33rd minute. It was the second consecutive day the Royals struck first in the 33rd minute as
Connor Nelson gave Bethel a 1-0 lead in Saturday's contest at St. Scholastica. As in Saturday's contest the Royals opponent was able to tie the game shortly before the half, but unlike Saturday it was the Royals who scored twice in the second period. Bethel took the lead on
Connor Nelson's goal at 59:10 with an assist from
Andrew Hintz.
Brendan Reich then finished the game with an exclamation point, scoring with just three seconds remaining.
After opening the season with five games against Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) competition, the Royals will now turn their attention to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) as they take on the St. Olaf College Oles on Wednesday afternoon. The contest will start at 4 p.m. in Northfield, Minnesota.
