Strong First Half gives Royals their Second Straight Win

WINONA, Minn.—Bethel University men's basketball handled Saint Mary's University on Saturday afternoon, earning an 81-60 road win. The Royals (6-2, 2-2 MIAC) had 11 players in the scoring column in their 21-point rout over the Cardinals (1-6, 0-4 MIAC).

Bethel started out the game on a 16-0 run in which they went 6-6 from the field and 4-4 from long range, three of those triples coming from Matt Ambriz. The Royals stretched their lead to 19 before the Cardinals went on a 15-5 run to bring the deficit down to single digits. Bethel hit the gas again and ended the half on a 14-6 run giving them a 17-point halftime advantage. BU picked up where they left off as they maintained a double-digit lead the entire second half. The Royals biggest lead was 22 points, which they held at both the 6:14 and 4:58 marks.

Ambriz continued his strong season as he notched double figures in his fourth straight game. He ended the day with 16 points on 4-5 shooting from deep. Derek Magnuson also had 16 points to go along with five boards and a block. Bridgeport Tusler stuffed the stat sheet by pulling down nine boards, dishing out seven assists as well as knocking down 4-5 shots for 11 total points. He led the team in rebounds and assists. Sophomore guards Jack Jenson and Granger Kingland round out the starting five with 11 and 9 points, respectively.

BU gained an advantage in nearly every aspect of the game. The Royals shot the lights out of Saint Mary's Gym as they went 15-21 (71.4 percent) from the foul line and 30-46 (65.2 percent) overall, while holding SMU to 41.4 percent from the field and 31.6 percent from three. Bethel outrebounded the Cardinals 32-23 and edged them out in bench points (18-17) and points in the paint (24-22).

The Royals make the trek up to Moorhead next Saturday, December 16 to play Concordia College at 3 p.m. BU went 1-1 against the Cobbers last season, the loss coming on a buzzer beating layup that gave Concordia a two-point win. The Royals look to avenge this loss and get their first regular season win away from home against CC since a 77-65 win in 2012.
