Men's Basketball Crowned Tournament Champs with Win over Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Bethel University's men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with Saturday's 89-72 victory over Carroll University. The Royals (2-0, 0-0 MIAC) shot 58 percent from the floor and 50 percent from downtown to secure the championship victory over the hosting Pioneers (1-1).
 
The two teams were tied at 21-21 with 11:20 remaining in the opening half, but a 10-4 run for BU in the ensuing three minutes helped Bethel build a six-point advantage going into the halftime intermission. Carroll cut it to four with just under 14 minutes remaining in the game, but the Royals quickly pushed their lead to 17 with an 18-5 run over the next five minutes and never looked back.
 
Tournament MVP Granger Kingland finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and two steals, while newcomers Matt Ambriz and Riley Dearring posted 19 and 18 points, respectively. Ambriz, who shot 4-of-8 from outside the arc, grabbed four rebounds, while Dearring, who went 4-of-6 from beyond the 3-point line and 6-of-8 from the floor, recorded three assists, three steals, and two boards.
 
Derek Magnuson fininished 6-of-7 from the floor for 13 points and five rebounds, while Jack Jenson, who was Bethel's other All-Tournament Team honoree, collected 10 points, seven boards, five assists, and two blocks. Tim Hanson added four points, three rebounds, and five assists in just 14 minutes played.
 
The Royals return to action Tuesday, November 21, when they travel to New Ulm, Minn., to face Martin Luther College at 5:30 p.m. They'll then travel to La Crosse, Wis., on Saturday, Nov. 25 for another nonconference test at UW-La Crosse at 2 p.m.
