Royals Remain Perfect with Dominant Win over Martin Luther
NEW ULM, Minn.—Bethel's men's basketball team remains undefeated following an 85-56 road win over Martin Luther College on Tuesday evening. The Royals (3-0, 0-0 MIAC) downed the Knights (0-3, 0-0 UMAC) by nearly 30 points, despite shooting just 19.2 percent from three.
Martin Luther kept the game close through most of the first half but with 7:40 remaining and the game tied at 23, Bethel went on an 18-1 run to give themselves a 17-point advantage at the break. The Royals ran away with it in the second half, furthering their lead up until the final buzzer. Bethel trailed one time during the contest (5-6), which came less than three minutes into the game.
Senior transfer Riley Dearring continues to improve as he led the team in scoring, notching 25 points on 8-18 shooting. He also grabbed seven boards and went 6-7 from the FT line.
Granger Kingland followed up his MVP caliber tournament last weekend with a solid 12-point, seven-rebound performance in BU's rout of the Knights.
Derek Magnuson led the team in rebounds with 10 and was two points shy of his first double-double of the season. Senior
Tim Hanson put up 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting off the bench. He was also a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.
Bridgeport Tusler led the team in assists with six.
Despite struggling with the long ball, the Royals shot 44.2 percent from the floor and 80.0 percent from the line. BU also held the Knights to just 17.6 percent from three, making only six of 34 attempts. They also asserted their dominance down low by outscoring MLC 58-26 in the paint. Bethel had more points off turnovers (11-2), second chance points (16-5), and bench points (27-13) in the victory over the winless Knights.
The Royals attempt to remain perfect when they go on the road to play the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Saturday, November 25 at 2 p.m. This will be the the Royals' last test before opening their MIAC slate with the home opener against Augsburg University on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m.
