SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Bethel University men's soccer team won a 1-0 overtime thriller against the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellow Jackets, Labor Day afternoon. The game was held scoreless throughout regulation, but the game was not without drama on the field. There were eight total cards in the game, four apiece for each team. The big one was the red card by Ryan Wisdom of USW in the 65th minute.
Despite playing undermanned through most of the second half USW led in the shots department, but Bethel goalie
Jakob Bartels came up with 13 saves, including a penalty kick.
"Not only did he save the penalty kick but also had four or five other big saves to keep the shutout," Coach Iwaszkowiec said.
In the 100th minute of the overtime period,
Joshua de la Rosa fired a shot from 25' out along the near sideline and put it just over the UWS goalie for the one and only goal of the game. The clock showed just three seconds remaining in the first overtime period as the Royals piled on de la Rosa in celebration. It was the second goal of the young season for de la Rosa while
Spencer Pearson had the assist.
"Overall it wasn't our best performance but I am happy for the guys," Iwaszkowiec said.
The Royals look to ride this two game winning streak into Friday afternoon when they play Crown College at 4 p.m. at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
