NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Bethel University women's soccer team continued their winning streak and moved to the top of the MIAC standings with a big 2-0 road win over Carleton College Wednesday afternoon. The Royals have not lost since their season opener and are 3-0 in the MIAC and 7-1-1 overall. Bethel used two first half goals and more outstanding defense to shut out the Knights and grab their first victory over Carleton in Northfield.
Maria Retting scored first for Bethel at 13:26 into the game with a shot to the lower left corner off an assist by Marnie Zilka. Retting has now scored seven goals in her debut season with the Royals. Bethel struck again in the 39th minute when Rachel Ness lobbed a shot from outside the box into the top right corner of the goal for her second score of the year and the Royals second score of the game. Brooke Ogne assisted Ness. From there neither team would score as the Royals defense and freshman goalie Dylan Melby shut the Knights out. Melby made five saves as the Royals outshot the Knights 12-9 overall and 9-5 in shots on goal.
The win sets up a pivotal showdown on Saturday afternoon at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex as the Royals will take on Augsburg College. Bethel and the Auggies are both tied atop the MIAC standings at 3-0. The Homecoming match will start at 1 p.m.
