ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - It was a beautiful, sunny day at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex as the Bethel University women's soccer team had their first home game, running off the field with the Royals first win of the season, 5-0. This game was as great way to follow up on their 1-1 tie against North Central College this past Sunday.
Bethel maintained possession of the ball throughout the majority of the game with three of their goals being scored within the first 21 minutes of the first half.
After the game, head coach
Amanda Maxwell shared, "I was proud of the team for the energy they brought to the game." She also added that the team's defense played particularly strong and organized and was able to keep a shut-out against Northland, a team which averaged 2.47 goals per game last year and returned their top four scorers.
Sophomore
Maggie Sipe had another successful day as she scored two goals with one assist, bringing her total up to three goals so far this season. With two assists and one goal, senior
Mikayla Nordin was able to score her first goal of her last season as a Royal.
"One of our goals for the day was to be confident in taking players on in the final third. We did that very well today by creating many chances and scoring some beautiful goals," recounted Coach Maxwell.
The Royals and the Lumberjills took less shots on goal in the second period, with only nine by Bethel and two by Northland.
Dylan Melby kept the Lumberjills from scoring throughout the entire game as she saved numerous shots on goal by Northland's earnest forward, senior Maddie Wieland.
After today's game, the Bethel Royals now stand with a 1-1-1 record as they play back at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex on Tuesday, September 13
th at 4 p.m. for their first MIAC game against St. Olaf College.
