Bethel Softball Wins Sixth Straight with Sweep over St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn.—Don't look now, but the Bethel University softball team has won six straight and 10 of their last 12 thanks to Wednesday's sweep over St. Olaf College. The Royals (16-14, 11-5 MIAC) scored two late runs in the fifth inning of game one, which led to a 4-1 victory in today's opener. BU then scored 10 runs in the fourth inning of game two, which helped Bethel 8-run rule the Oles (10-13, 5-9 MIAC).

Abbie Bircher led the Royals at the plate. Bircher finished the day 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI. Wendy Roberts also brought in three runs and scored twice, while going 2-for-6 at the dish. Caroline Kivisto tallied multiple hits on the day and walked once as well. Kivisto scored twice throughout the pair of games. Hannah Hensley also scored three times, while going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Lindsay Edeen continued her exceptional pitching inside the circle Wednesday. Edeen, who allowed one earned run on six hits and five walks, struck out a career-high 11 St. Olaf batters, which marks the first time Edeen has tallied double-digit strikeouts in a single game.

Karli Persson was equally dominant in game two, as the right-handed hurler surrendered two earned runs on nine hits and one walk in 5.0 innings pitched. Persson also struck out two in her eighth win of the season.

Now 11-5 in conference play and fourth among all MIAC opponents, Bethel looks to continue their winning streak Saturday when they host Augsburg College at the Ona Orth Complex. First pitch against the Auggies is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Royals will be holding a strikeout cancer event throughout the doubleheader.
