Royals Suffer Late-Season Hiccup versus Augsburg

Arden Hills, Minn.—The Bethel University softball team hosted their second annual Strikeout Cancer event when they hosted Augsburg College Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Royals, (16-16, 7-7 MIAC) the excitment from the celebration did not translate to the field, as the Auggies (17-17, 6-10 MIAC) handed BU a pair of losses by the final score of 4-3 and 3-1.

Game one had the Royals locked in at 2-2 going into the sixth inning. The Auggies added two more to their score in the top of the sixth and, despite Caroline Kivisto's RBI-double in the bottom of the sixth, Bethel still fell short by one run. BU certainly had their chances, as the Royals had the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth inning, but came up empty in both frames.

Caroline Kivisto finished the day 5-6 at the plate which included a home run in the third inning of game one—her seventh of the season. Kivisto finished game one with two RBI.  Wendy Roberts went 3-7 with a double, while Micayla Moore finished 2-4 with a sac-fly RBI in game one.

Lindsay Edeen pitched all seven innings of game one, allowing two earned runs and striking out five. Karli Persson followed up in game two. In 5.2 innings pitched, no earned runs were scored and Persson struck out five.

The Royals, who dropped to fifth place following Saturday's sweep, will need to have a short memory as they fight for their playoff lives Sunday against Carleton. First pitch against the Knights is scheduled for 1 p.m.
