Shutouts Help Royals Secure Second Straight Sweep

MOORHEAD, Minn.—Bethel University's sweep train continued Thursday evening, as the Royals (10-12, 5-3 MIAC) defeated Concordia College twice in Moorhead. Mikayla Moore's three-run home run pushed BU past the Cobbers (14-10, 1-5 MIAC) in game one and Karli Persson's 13 strikeouts in game two helped Bethel secure the sweep.

Ironically, both games resulted in a 3-0 score. Bethel's only runs in game one came in the top of the third when Moore blasted a three-run shot to right-center with Caroline Kivsito and Shelbi Swenson on base. The Royals only mustered five hits in Thursday's opener, though, which required exceptional pitching inside the circle.

Thankfully senior hurler Lindsay Edeen came through. Edeen allowed four hits, zero walks, and zero runs, while striking out six in the complete-game shutout. Edeen, who lowered her season ERA to 2.89, has now given up 12 runs in the last 46 innings.

Game two was very similar, as Bethel was held to just six hits in seven innings. Three of the team's half-dozen hits belonged to Kalyn Sorensen, who finished 3-for-4 with her second home run in as many days. Sorensen's senior sidekick Caroline Kivisto also recorded a solo home run in her 2-for-3 performance at the plate. The only other player to get a hit was Micalya Moore, who also scored an insurance run in the final frame.

Coming off an all-time high of becoming the program's all-time wins leader Wednesday evening, Karli Persson gave an encore Thursday evening by striking out 13 and allowing zero runs in the complete-game win. Concordia scattered seven hits and two walks, but Persson tallied at least one strikeout in every inning (nine in frames 2-5).

Now 4-0 in their last two conference series', Bethel hopes to use that momentum Saturday when they play host to Hamline University, who is also 5-3 on the season. First pitch at Ona Orth Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.
