ST. PAUL—Bethel University's softball team collected a much-needed sweep over Macalester College in Wednesday evening's conference doubleheader. The Royals (8-12, 3-3 MIAC) knocked off the Scots (9-15, 2-4 MIAC) 10-1 in the opener, but needed a rally in game two to win by a final score of 3-2.
Â
Karli Persson made Bethel history, as her complete-game victory in game number two stamped her name in the softball record books for all-time wins. Persson, who recorded victory No. 42 inside the circle, surpassed Angela Vedders, who tallied 41 from 2003-06. Not only is Persson the all-time wins leader for Bethel softball, but her career ERA of 3.32 also ranks No. 1 (minimum of 300 innings pitched).
Â
Persson allowed four hits, one walk, and two earned runs against the Scots, while striking out four. The two runs came in the bottom of the first, but Persson settled in after that and held Macalester scoreless in the final six frames.
Â
Also coming up big inside the circle Wednesday was game one's starter
Lindsay Edeen. Edeen logged the complete-game victory by allowing four hits, one walk, and one earned run, while striking out four. The Scot's lone run in game one came on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Offensively the Royals scored four runs in the top of the second, which gave themselves an early cushion in Wednesday's opener. Bethel then added one in the sixth and five in the seventh to seal the nine-run advantage.
Â
Abbie Bircher,
Kalyn Sorensen,
Wendy Roberts, and
Casey Marcus all posted multiple hits. Bircher finished 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI's.
Kalyn Sorensen, who blasted her first home run of the year, went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Wendy Roberts ended game one 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored and
Casey Marcus continued her domination at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with one run and three RBI.
Â
Like Sorensen, Marcus too hit a home run, however, hers was a three-run shot in the top of the second. The Willmar, Minnesota, native is now 10-for-21 with eight runs and eight RBI in her last seven games.
Â
As mentioned earlier, Macalester took the early lead in game two with a pair of runs in the initial frame. Bethel struck back with one run in the third and two runs in the fifth, however.
Micayla Moore hit an RBI-single in the third, which scored
Shelbi Swenson. Then with two outs in the fifth,
Kalyn Sorensen hit an RBI single and
Wendy Roberts followed with an RBI double, which put the Royals ahead for good 3-2.
Â
Moore finished game two 2-for-4 with a run and one RBI. Meanwhile,
Wendy Roberts also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and one RBI.Â
BU will try to carry that momentum into Thursday's twin bill against Concordia College. First pitch against the Cobbers is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Moorhead, Minnesota.Â
