ResultsDULUTH, Minn. – The Bethel University women's tennis team won their sixth straight match on Friday evening at the Arrowhead Tennis Center where they took down the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Royals remain undefeated on the season as they took home the 7-2 victory.
"This was a great road win for the ladies, they came ready to play for a tough night match and I'm really proud of the way they performed," said head coach
Drew Fernelius.
The Royals lost the opening match of the day 3-8 in the No. 1 doubles contest but quickly bounced back, taking the final two points of doubles play. The No. 2 team of
Sydney Parkinson and
Samantha Hindt grabbed the first point of the match for Bethel with an 8-2 win while Maddy Simpson and
Jill Weintzettel followed with an 8-3 triumph in the No. 3 slot. Despite the top team of
Mattie Kidder and
Anna Browning losing their first doubles match of the season, the Royals would take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
In typical fashion, the Royals dominated singles play on Saturday, taking the final five matches. After the Bulldogs captured the No. 1 singles match, Bethel quickly closed the door with five consecutive straight-set victories. Hindt led the way with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win from the No. 4 position before her fellow teammates clinched the victory for Bethel.
"I love the way the girls have encouraged and fought for each other, we just have to keep working hard," said Fernelius.
The Royals will now have a week to prepare for next weekend's match against Gustavus, a perennial powerhouse and perhaps the toughest match of the season for Bethel. The marquee contest is slated to start at 8 a.m. in St. Peter
