ST. PAUL, Minn.— The Bethel University women's hockey team had to pack away their brooms Saturday afternoon, as they fell short of a weekend sweep of St. Catherine's University, the final scoring being 3-2. After defeating the Wildcats the previous night, the Royals started off on the same note that they left off on by scoring two goals in the first period. Junior
Wendy Roberts started off the afternoon for the Royals, scoring five minutes into the first period with Kristen Olson and
Erika Geary assisting. The Royals closed out the first period with
Kaitlyn VanTassel scoring her fourth goal of the season, putting them up 2-0 at the end of one.
The Wildcats took advantage of a trio of second period power plays, scoring twice and adding another in the third period to total three unanswered goals to take control of the game. Special teams played a big role in the Wildcats' comeback. The Royals penalty kill was unable to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard, as their first two goals came on the power play, less than a minute a part. Alex Pederson notched the final point for the Wildcats, which proved to be the game winner as the Royals were unable to tie the game late in the third period. Bethel goaltender,
Maggie Straka finished the game with 19 total saves.
Bethel will face Northland College of Wisconsin next weekend in a non-conference series. The Royals will look to finish well as this will be the final games before winter break. Bethel and Northland will faceoff Friday December 9th, at 7 p.m. at Bethel University Arena in the National Sports Center.
