Roberts Game Winner Gives Royals Come Back Victory Over SCU, 4-3

BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team pulled out a come from behind victory in a thrilling 4-3 contest with St. Catherine's University Friday night. The back-and-forth action was constant, especially in the third period, but in the end it was the Royals who were able to score back-to-back goals late in the contest to finish on top and take the important MIAC victory. The win allows the Royals to remain unbeaten in MIAC play and remain a part of the four-way tie at the top of the MIAC standings through five games with eight points.

The Wildcats struck first, scoring the only goal of the first period with just 14 seconds remaining to take the early 1-0 lead. The game remained 1-0 despite an onslaught of shots from the Royals until late in the second period when Megan O'Brian was able to create a turnover while on the penalty kill and beat the Wildcats defenders down the ice and put one past the SCU goalie to tie the game at 1-1. Bethel outshot St. Kate's 14-5 in the second period after the Wildcats owned a slim 11-10 shot advantage in the first period.

The wild third period action started right away as the Wildcats were able to score first to take back the lead just 1:18 into the period. After a blocked shot created a two-on-one for SCU Morgan Tentis was able to finish a pass from Jordan Solheim. Bethel wasted little time responding however, as Sarina Goos scored a great goal from Megan O'Brian and Sarah Moy at 2:37. The back-and-forth action continued with both teams hitting pipes and both goalies making great saves. The Wildcats were able to take the lead back once again with a score at 8:33. Exactly three minutes later Bethel tied the game back up again when Abby Felton knocked one in with Lauren Kolak and Kaitlyn VanTassel creating the play. Bethel was able to be the first to score consecutive goals as Wendy Roberts netted the game winner at 13:19. Bailey Thompson created a turnover and got the puck to Erika Geary who passed ahead to Roberts as she fired a shot on net which was tipped by the SCU goalie off the pipe and then off the goalie's back and into the net to set off the eruption in Bethel University Arena. Bethel was able to keep the Wildcats at bay the rest of the way as goalie Michelle Klimstra totaled 19 saves in the game.

The Royals and Wildcats will tangle again Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Drake Arena at St. Paul Academy.
