MANKATO, Minn. – It was an exciting evening for the Royals as they took on Bethany Lutheran Monday and came out victorious with a 2-1 win. Despite being rained out a few weeks ago, which caused the Bethel and Bethany Lutheran women's game to be postponed, the Bethel women were ready to go today as they played the Vikings up through overtime.
The game showed to be Bethel-dominated as 24 shots were made on the goal by the Royals with only three shots made by the Vikings. Though possession of the ball was held mainly by the Royals, no goals were scored in the first half of the game.
Only 10 minutes into the second half, sophomore Maggie Sipe scored her first goal of the game with an assist by senior Mikayla Nordin. The Vikings remained scoreless until 80 minutes into the game, a goal was scored by junior Nicole Moldstad for Bethany Lutheran, tying up the game at 1-1 with only 10 minutes left on the clock.
The women kicked up the intensity during overtime as three shots were made that led up to Sipe's winning goal for the Royals, being her second goal of the game. Sipe leads the Royals with nine goals on the season so far with Nordin at six and freshman Maria Retting at five, following close behind.
The Bethel women now stand at a 9-1-1 record so far this season with a leading MIAC record of 4-0-0. On Saturday, October 8th, the Royals will make their way to St. Joseph, Minnesota to compete for another conference win against the College of Saint Benedict at 1 p.m. Their following game will be at home at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex on Tuesday, October 10th at 4 p.m. against St. Catherine University.
