BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team opened their season with an impressive 3-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior. In a penalty riddled game which saw the Royals sent to the box nine times, the Bethel penalty kill was certainly one of the big stories of the game. Bethel's second goal even came short-handed, just seconds after a 5-on-3 advantage for the Yellowjackets ended. Despite spending over 12 minutes killing off power plays the Royals were able to outshoot UWS 37-31.
After a scoreless first period in which the Royals generated several good scoring opportunities, the first goal of the season came just over seven minutes into the second period.
Briita Nelson grabbed a UWS turnover and broke away down the right side and was able to go top shelf to beat the Yellowjacket goalie. Freshman
Kaitlyn VanTassel was credited with an assist. The Royals second goal came just seconds after the Royals successfully fended off a 5-on-3 advantage for UWS and the Royals still shorthanded. Bethel was able to get a rush in front of the net with
Wendy Roberts banging a shot off the UWS goalie before
Natalie Simons grabbed the puck and slid it past the goalie for a 2-0 Bethel advantage. The score came with under a minute remaining in the second period. Bethel killed off four UWS power plays in the second period alone, including the shorthanded goal.
The third period saw the Yellowjackets finally capitalize on a power play opportunity as they scored at 11:41 into the period on their seventh and final power play of the game.
Michelle Klimstra and the Royals defense held strong the rest of the way however and
Wendy Roberts finished it off with an empty net goal with just over a minute remaining.
The Royals will return to the ice Saturday night when they welcome the No. 2 ranked University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The Falcons lost in the National Championship game last spring. The last time UWRF visited Bethel University Arena, in 2014-15, the Royals defeated the Falcons 6-3. The puck will drop Saturday at 7 p.m.
