ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - On a chilly afternoon at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex the Bethel University men's soccer team squeaked out a victory against the University of Minnesota-Morris 3-2. The game winning goal came off a penalty kick with 11 seconds left by
Curt Levalley.
The first half the Royals were dominant, getting chance after chance in front of the net. After many outstanding saves by the Cougars goalie Cody Christ the Royals finally found the back of the net in the 39
th minute when
Keagan Heckmann scored off an assist from
Joshua Carlson.
Two minutes later, the Royals were able to find the net again when
Brandon Martinez-Luhman made a nice strike off another assist by
Joshua Carlson. The Royals took a comfortable 2-0 lead into halftime.
The second half started physical as the Cougars picked up 2 yellow cards within a minute of each other. In the 69
th minute Denis Ostroushko of the Cougars picked up his second yellow card resulting in a red card and a disqualification.
The Cougars scored a goal prior to the disqualification and even though they were a man down tied the game up with a goal in the 83rd minute.
With time winding down, the Royals made one last attack and one of the Cougars defenders committed a handball violation in the box giving the Royals the penalty kick that would win the game with 11 seconds left.
The Royals outshot the Cougars 12-4, and only made one save on the day in the win.
The Royals improve to 8-5-1, with this being their last nonconference game, as they finish up their season with four conference games. They'll be in action Saturday at the Ona Orth Complex when they host Gustavus at 3:30 pm.
