ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—It had to end at some point. Unfortunately for Bethel University's men's basketball team, it was tonight. The Royals (10-3, 5-3 MIAC) couldn't get gelling against Augsburg College throughout Wednesday night's MIAC matchup and as a result, suffered a 62-66 setback against the visiting Auggies (9-4, 4-4 MIAC). The loss is BU's first at home since January 19, 2015—snapping a 15-game home winning streak.
Augsburg's 3-2 zone throughout the entire 40 minutes of play troubled the Royals, who shot 41.7 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from downtown. The zone forced Bethel into 30 3-pointers taken and just four free throw attempts.
BU outscored the Auggies 10-3 in second chance points, but Augsburg outscored Bethel 15-9 in points off of turnovers.
Brycen Wojta led the team in scoring, as the junior guard finished with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Wojta, who was 6-of-12 from outside the arc, had a deep 3-pointer rim in and out with 10 seconds remaining in the game, which would have tied the score at 65-65.
Also scoring in double figures was
Bridgeport Tusler, who tallied 18 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Derek Magnuson finished the night with eight points and nine boards.
Brett Rasmussen led the Auggies with 20 points, while Joe Zangel posted 17 points and nine rebounds and Collin Olmschied recorded 16 points and 12 boards.
Despite seeing their 15-game home winning streak come to a close, Bethel has still managed to build an 18-3 record in the Robertson Center Gym since the start of 2014-15. The Royals look to start a new streak on Saturday, when they play Hamline in a men's and women's doubleheader. Tipoff between the Pipers and BU is scheduled for 1 p.m.
