WINONA, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team came up on the short end of a 2-0 decision against the Saint Mary's University Cardinals despite outshooting SMU by a 15-4 clip. The Royals put seven shots on goal to the Cardinals three, but unfortunately for Bethel two of those three SMU shots scored while none of the Royals shots were successful. Bethel generated seven corner kicks on the day to just three by Saint Mary's. Both Cardinal goals came early in the first half. SMU scored seven minutes in and then again 14 minutes later for the games only goals.
Savannah Swanson led Bethel with five shots total and three on goal.
Mikala Smith also had five shots, two on goal.
The loss to Saint Mary's was the first for Bethel since 2010 and leaves the Royals still searching for their first MIAC win of 2015. The Royals stand at 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the MIAC. SMU improved to 1-2 and 3-5 on the year. Bethel will be in action again on Wednesday afternoon when they host Carleton College, an MIAC playoff rematch from a season ago, at 4 p.m. at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
