Bethel Suffers First Loss in Thriller at #6 UW-Stevens Point

Stevens Point, Wis.—Bethel University's perfect start to the 2015 season has come to an end, as the Royals suffered their first setback of the year at No. 6-ranked UW-Stevens Point. BU rebounded incredibly well by defeating John Carroll in their final match of the UWSP tournament and improving to 9-1 overall.

The Royals fell to the hosting Pointers 0-3 in Saturday's opener, but the first two games were exceptionally close. BU had two set points in the first set, but fell in the end by a final of 27-29. Bethel then led 21-16 in the second set, but allowed the Pointers to go on a 9-2 run down the stretch and lost 22-25. Trying to overcome the shock of games one and two, BU trailed UW-SP 4-9 early in game three and never recovered, losing 19-25.

Bethel jumped right into its second match of the day and fourth of the weekend immediately after its contest with UW-Stevens Point. Putting their first loss of the year quickly behind them, BU cruised past John Carroll University—a team that took UW-SP five games the night before—in three straight games. The Royals topped the Blue Streaks 25-15 in the opening game thanks to a 13-5 run down the stretch. They then overcame a 23-24 deficit in the second to win 28-26, which was followed by a decisive 25-18 victory in the third.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Bethel's Carlee Hoppe and Tegan LaBerge were honored to the All-Tournament Team. Hoppe finished Saturday with 27 kills and 23 digs, while LaBerge posted 14 kills and four blocks. Individual statistics from today's matches can be seen on the box scores.

The Royals will begin conference play Wednesday, September 16 when they host Gustavus Adolphus in the Robertson Center Gym at 7 p.m.
