Royals Remain Perfect with 64-62 Victory over Northwestern

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—The Bethel University men's basketball team and the University of Northwestern-St. Paul treated the packed-out Robertson Center Gym to an electric night from start to finish, but it was the Royals (5-0) that had the edge Tuesday night—defeating the Eagles (5-1) 64-62 in the battle of unbeaten teams.

BU's victory snaps UNW's five-game winning streak and improves the Royals to 5-0 on the season, which is the best start since the 2006-07 season. Additionally, Bethel continues its 11-game win streak at home.

The nonconference contest was streaky throughout the entire 40 minutes of play. Despite all the back-and-forth, no team led by more than four until BU opened up a 63-53 lead with 5:16 remaining in the game. UNW stormed back immediately, however, scoring nine consecutive points. But with 27 ticks remaining, Kyle von_Schmidt-Pauli converted a free throw attempt and the Royals held Northwestern scoreless in the final seconds.

Bethel forced the Eagles into 15 turnovers, opposed to their five, which resulted in a 18-7 advantage in points off of turnovers. Moreover, BU outscored Northwestern inside 40-26.

A big reason behind that was red shirt freshman Derek Magnuson, who continued his momentum from last week's double-double, with a 29-point effort tonight. Magnuson scored 25 of his 29 points in the first half on 12-of-17 shooting. He finished the game 14-of-21 with three rebounds and one block.

Also scoring in double figures was Trevor Hall, who poured in 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Hall also added seven boards, four assists, and two steals to his final stat line. Kyle von_Schmidt-Pauli delivered seven points, nine rebounds, and three assists as well.

The Royals look to stay unbeaten as they enter conference play this Saturday. Bethel hosts Concordia College in the Robertson Center Gym at 1 p.m.
