MINNEAPOLIS – The Bethel University men's soccer team went on the road to Augsburg College Saturday evening and came away with a big 2-1 victory over the Auggies. All of the games scoring took place within the first 11 minutes of the contest and the Royals, led by goalie
Jakob Bartels, held off the Auggies second half charge to capture their first MIAC victory.
The Royals struck first with a
Danny Jaderholm header goal from
Ryan Ness just 5:41 into the game. Augsburg answered back with a goal three-and-a-half minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. Bethel's eventual game winning answer came just a minute later however, as
Luke Chase finished from the left side after being set up by
Connor Miller and Ness. It was Chase's first goal of the season and would be the end of the scoring in the game despite several chances through the rest of the game. Augsburg would outshoot Bethel 11-4 in the second half and 18-12 for the game but
Jakob Bartels and the Royals defense held the 2-1 lead. Bartels made seven saves in the contest.
The win is the first for Bethel since the season opening victory at Northwestern and improves their MIAC record to 1-3-1. Augsburg fell to 2-2 in the MIAC and 4-5-1 overall. Next up for Bethel is a non-conference road match against Crown College on Tuesday before returning to the Ona Orth Athletic Complex for a Homecoming battle with Saint John's University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
