A Trio of Firsts Pushes Royals Past the Cougars 4-0

MORRIS, Minn.—The Bethel University men's soccer team defeated the University of Minnesota-Morris Tuesday afternoon to extend their non-conference win streak to two, after beating the Cougars on the road by a score of 4-0 thanks to a trio of first half goals. Not only did the Royals own the Cougars in goals scored, but they also controlled the shot column—outshooting Minnesota-Morris 18-9.

BU broke open the scoring nine minutes into the game when sophomore Kevin Hintz dribbled through a pack of Morris defenders and buried the ball in the back of the net for his first goal of the season and first goal as a Bethel Royal. Senior Ryan Ness netted his fourth goal of the year after a beautiful assist from Andrew Tschumper, helping the Royals go up 2-0 at the 19:16 mark in the first half. Just over 10 minutes later Ryan Nichols dropped a free kick in Carson Thomas's lap and Thomas was able to blast home his first career goal. Already leading 3-0, Bethel was able to tack on an insurance goal with just over two minutes remaining in the game, when Nichols again perfected the free kick from just inside the timeline. Deo Mungruriak took Nichols pass and netted his first career goal as well at the 87:19 mark, which put the Royals ahead 4-0.

In all three players scored their first goal as a Royal and Ryan Nichols led the team with two assists. Goalkeeper Jakob Bartels was stellar in net, shutting out the Cougars for 88:40 minutes before Sam Asfahl came in for the final 1:20.

The dominating 4-0 road win over Morris improves the Royals overall record to 4-7-2.  Bethel will travel south to St Peter, Minn., this Saturday to take on last year's MIAC playoff champion Gustavus Adolphus College. The Golden Gusties are still searching for their first conference win after starting off with a 0-3-3 record in the MIAC.  The match will begin at 1 p.m.
