Royals and Blugolds Play to 3-3 Draw

Box Score ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team came out with a 3-3 draw on Wednesday night against the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds.  While the Royals outshot their counterparts they were not able to convert as many chances as they would have liked, depositing just 3 goals on 17 shots.

After allowing an early goal in the first half, the Royals found themselves trailing 1-0 heading into halftime.  However, it did not take long to turn their fortunes around as Mikayla Nordin netted their first goal just three minutes into the second half and teammate Blythe Whealy scored less than four minutes later.  Head coach Amanda Maxwell was clearly pleased by this sudden turnaround saying she was "proud of the team for coming back after being down 1-0 at half."

However, the Blugolds were not fazed by the early onslaught in the second half as Sami Matuszak scored her second goal of the game just seconds after the Royals took a 3-1 lead.  The Blugolds found themselves just one goal down at this point and they had finally swung the momentum back in their favor.  The Royals maintained their one-goal lead until the 82nd minute, when Megan Larsen struck the equalizer for the Blugolds.

Surely a deflating blow, the Royals entered the first overtime period looking to rekindle the spark they had coming out of halftime.  Despite all the second half action, neither team was able to breakthrough in the overtime period.  The game was sent into a second overtime session, yielding the same result as the first.

Ultimately, the Royals played a solid game, but were left with a disappointing result given the lead they held late in the game.  In light of this disappointment, coach Maxwell knew there were plenty of positives saying, "We saw a lot of players step up and have a great game."  The women will play next on Tuesday at home against UW-Stout at 4 p.m.
