Bethel Settles For 1-1 Draw in Season Opener

Box Score

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Bethel University women's soccer team settled for a season-opening 1-1 draw on the road against North Central College in a game that was twice delayed by inclement weather. Lightning delayed the start by 40 minutes and again in the second half for a full hour.

Once the action started, the Royals and senior Jessica Huseby needed just 42 seconds to get on the scoreboard. Freshman Savannah Swanson received the ball on top of the box and took on two defenders before slotting the ball to Huseby who put in the lower corner and the Royals held an early 1-0 advantage. It was the first career point for Swanson and the 46th for Huseby.

"It was good to get on the board early," said third-year head coach Amanda Maxwell. "I was proud of the girls for being able to mentally stick with it after the delays."

The Cardinals quickly evened the game up to start the second period, with a goal just 2:03 in. The second delay, which lasted for 60 minutes, stopped the action with 32:07 left to play. When action finally resumed neither team could break the tie.

Bethel will take Saturday off before traveling to Elmhurst College for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday afternoon. The Royals will then make their home debut Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
