Soccer Opens Season with 2-0 Loss at Simpson

Box Score

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Bethel University men's soccer team opened their season on the road at Simpson College Friday night and despite outshooting the Storm for the second consecutive year, came up empty handed in a 2-0 loss. Simpson scored once in each half, making the most of their opportunities while the Royals were unable to put any of their 12 shots in the back of the net.

The Storm opened the scoring with a goal from five yards out just 5:31 into the game. Their second tally came mid-way through the second period off a corner kick. The Storm used a 7-2 corner kick advantage to their benefit, despite being outshot by the Royals 12-8. Freshman goalie Jakob Bartels made four saves in his Bethel debut in the net.

"It was good to get the first game under our belts," said fourth-year Royals coach Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "Obviously we are disappointed with the result, but we had some good moments. We need to sharpen up our execution in the final third and mentally stay together. Preseason has been long and tiring. We are excited to get some rest this weekend and prepare for Northwestern on Tuesday."

Bethel will make their season debut at home Tuesday afternoon at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex to begin a season-long, five-game home stand. The Royals and Eagles will square off at 5p.m. Live video and stats can be found here
