ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's soccer team delivered a strong defensive performance against nationally ranked and undefeated St. Olaf College on Saturday afternoon, falling just short in a 1-0 MIAC battle at Ona Orth Athletic Complex in its final home match of the season.
Facing an Oles squad that entered the contest without a loss, the Royals held one of the conference's top teams scoreless throughout the opening 45 minutes.
St. Olaf applied pressure early, recording 10 first-half shots, but Bethel's defensive unit remained composed and kept the Oles off the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Griffin Blokker delivered a standout performance in net, including a crucial first-half penalty kick save that helped preserve the scoreless tie heading into halftime.
The Oles broke through shortly after the break when Tustin Todd scored his fifth goal of the season in the 51st minute, giving St. Olaf a 1-0 advantage.
Despite falling behind, Bethel responded with an impressive offensive effort throughout the remainder of the second half.
The Royals outshot St. Olaf 10-8 after halftime, putting three attempts on goal while generating four corner kicks. Bethel continued to challenge the Oles' defense in search of an equalizer but was unable to find the back of the net.
Edin Nguyen, Jack Gerber and Devin Igl each recorded two shots to lead the Royals, while Nguyen, Gerber and Tadeo Magana each put an attempt on goal.
St. Olaf finished with an 18-13 advantage in total shots, while both teams recorded four corner kicks.
Defensively, Blokker finished with five saves across all 90 minutes, highlighted by his first-half penalty kick stop, helping keep the Royals within one goal throughout the contest.
The narrow defeat moves Bethel to 4-11-2 overall and 1-6-2 in MIAC play, while St. Olaf improves to 15-0-2 overall and 8-0-0 in conference action.
Up Next: Bethel travels to Mankato on Monday, Oct. 26, for a non-conference match-up against Bethany Lutheran College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Royals will then have one MIAC contest remaining on their regular-season schedule.
