Scouting the Royals
Bethel finished sixth in the conference standings after completing its regular season with a 13-12 record overall and a 9-11 achievement in conference play. The Royals will play in the post season for its third consecutive season and it's first under new head coach,
Doug Novak.
Scouting the Auggies
Augsburg will stay in Si Melby Hall for tonight's matchup as the team received the third overall seed for postseason play. The Auggies finished with an 18-7 overall record and a 14-6 mark in league play. This will also be the third consecutive season that they are playing in the postseason.
Just in the nick of time
Last time these two squads faced each other, Andy Seidlitz of Augsburg scored his 1,000th career point as the Augsburg College men's basketball team posted a 80-71 win over Bethel on February 15. Seidlitz became the 19th player in Augsburg's history to join the 1000-point club, as he finished the game with 18 points. Seidlitz now has a career total of 1,001 points in 101 career games.
Third times a charm
Earlier in conference play this season, these two squads matched up twice. In both competitions, Augsburg was victorious by an average of almost 14 points per game. The Royals will now travel back to Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis—where they lost 71-80 just 2 weeks ago—to face the Auggies on their home court once again.
Continued postseason prominence
New head coach,
Doug Novak, was introduced in June as the new head men's basketball coach at Bethel University after spending the last seven years as the top assistant at NCAA Division I Tulane University in New Orleans, La. Novak now has brought the Royals back to postseason play in his first year at the institution. This will be the programs 13th appearance in the last 15 seasons. The last time Bethel played Augsburg in the postseason was in the 2008-09, when the Royals topped the Auggies 70-59, but fell in the championship game.
Positive playoff performance
Since coming to the institution in 2005, head basketball coach at Augsburg College Aaron Griess has held a winning overall record (112-96). Of his eight years as head coach, he has participated in the MIAC Playoffs four times and of those four, advanced to the semifinals twice.
Leading the charts
Two Augsburg College basketball players lead the league in the points per game. Seniors Dan Kornbaum and Andy Seidlitz average 19.3 and 18.4 points a night, respectively. Kornbaum also ranks second in field-goal percentage at 66.4 percent.
Young star
Brycen Wojta, a freshman from Maple Grove, Minn., has been a key player for the Royals this season. Wojta ranks No. 1 among MIAC opponents in steals, swiping 50 take-a-ways this year. He also is also in the Top 5 for free throw percentage, ranking fourth with a shooting percentage of 85.9. Also, Wojta comes in at number six for points per game, averaging just under 15 a night.
