Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker on the road at Macalester when the Scots scored with just 16 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. Freshman goalkeeper
Jakob Bartels put up an outstanding effort, making 10 saves, to keep the Royals in the contest but the Scots were able to put one in from deep in the box in the final seconds to take the victory.
Bartels made several outstanding saves as Bethel kept the Scots at bay for the first 74 minutes of the game before MAC scored first. The Royals responded just a minute later as
Stephen Gronseth scored on an assist from
Ryan Nichols. The game remained tied at 1-1 and it appeared it would end that way. Macalester, however, was able to break through with the final goal with just 16 seconds left on the clock, leaving the Royals dejected and still searching for their first MIAC victory this season.
Macalester outshot Bethel 29-11 in the game and 13-5 in shots on goal.
Matthew Pisarski and Gronseth both put two shots on goal for Bethel.
The loss drops the Royals to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in MIAC play. Macalester improved to 7-4-1 and 3-2 in the MIAC. Bethel will travel to Superior, Wisconsin Tuesday for a non-conference tilt with the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior. The Royals then will finally return home, for the first time since September 17th, to face Saint John's University Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
