ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University Men's soccer team escaped with a 1-0 victory against the Concordia College Cobbers on Wednesday afternoon, capturing their second consecutive home win. The Royals needed all of 100 minutes to take home the victory, netting the deciding goal with just 15 seconds left in the first overtime period.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first 90 minutes in a largely defensive game and coach Iwaszkowiec was not impressed with his team's performance. "In the first half I thought we were very poor, we were lethargic, we couldn't connect passes and we struggled to find our rhythm."
The Royals produced just one shot in the first half against the Cobber's defense and coach Iwaszkowiec acknowledged serious adjustments were required at halftime. However, despite the eight shots the Royals put up in the second half, they failed to find the back of the net.
The match would head into the first overtime period locked in a scoreless tie, with both goaltenders giving their team solid performances to extend the game. The Royals missed an early scoring opportunity but rallied in the final minute to break the tie with a timely goal by
Matthew Pisarski and assisted by
Danny Jaderholm. Senior
AJ Syler was solid in the net for Bethel, making three saves to post his first shutout of the season and third victory.
The Royals improved to 6-9 on the season while grabbing their sixth home win. They will face Saint Mary's University on Saturday before ending their four-game home stretch against Hamline on Wednesday.
