Early Lead Doesn't Hold Up for Royals

Box Score

BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team was unable to make an early lead stand up and fell at home to Saint Mary's University 4-1. The Royals had an early goal wiped off when it was ruled they scored on a high stick deflection. Shortly afterwards however, Tyler Sorensen was able to squirt one through the SMU goalies legs to give the Royals a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game. Saint Mary's tied the game five minutes later and took the lead when they knocked one in with just one second remaining in the first period. They added their third goal late in the second period and added an empty netter with under a minute remaining.

Bethel outshot Saint Mary's 29-24 in the game but the Royals offensive opportunities declined as the game went on. The Royals took 14 first period shots to just five in the third. Bethel was unsuccessful in two power plays totaling 3:27, while SMU went scoreless in their 8:27 of power play minutes. Steven Bolton made 20 saves for Bethel.

The loss drops the Royals to 2-11-2 overall and 1-5-1 in MIAC play while the Cardinals improved to 6-7-1 and 2-3 in the MIAC. Bethel will travel to Winona, Minnesota Saturday for a 7 p.m. game with the Cardinals.
