LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bethel University women's hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie on the road at Lake Forest College Friday night. A short-handed goal by
Kathryn Larson with just 1:10 remaining in the third period saved the Royals from defeat. In a matchup of two of the highest scoring teams in women's hockey, the Royals and Foresters needed two periods to heat up, but both teams ended below their season scoring averages in their first game of 2014. After just a single goal by Lake Forest in the first two periods the two teams combined to score three times within the first three minutes of the third period.
Lake Forest entered Friday's contest second the nation averaging five goals per game while Bethel was ninth at 3.64. The Foresters scored first just a minute and fifty seconds into the game, giving fans an early feeling they would see a high scoring game as expected. The long layoff however took its affect on the squads as that would be the only score heading into the third period. The Royals tied the game up just fifty seconds into the third period on a goal by
Megan O'Brian.
Kalie Johnson, the MIAC leader in assists, and
Cristina Masten, the MIAC's scoring leader, assisted O'Brian. Lake Forest wasted little time taking the lead back as they scored just a minute and a half later. The Royals responed even quicker with a goal by
Lindsay Burman just 24 seconds later.
Kathryn Larson and
Caroline Kivisto assisted Burman. Five minutes later Lake Forest reclaimed the lead and appeared to be in control of the game, going on a power play with just 1:39 remaining in the game. Larson had other ideas, however as she scored the game tying goal with 1:10 remaining, shorthanded on an assist from Burman.
The Royals and Foresters will go at it again Saturday afternoon. Bethel is now 8-2-2 on the year while Lake Forest is now 7-3-3.
