ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—Bethel's five game winning streak came to an end Monday night, as the University of St. Thomas handed BU a 90-48 loss. The loss drops the Royals (7-5, 3-4 MIAC) to No. 8 in the conference standings—just one game back of fourth place, while the Tommies (12-0, 7-0 MIAC) remain in first place among all league opponents.
After averaging over 50 percent shooting and 80 points in the last four games, Bethel managed to make just 38.6 percent of its shots from the floor—including just 9.5 percent (2-of-21) of its shots from beyond the 3-point arc—another uncommon trend. Conversely, the Tommies completed nearly 60 percent of its field goals and 50 percent of its shots from downtown.
Joseph Gill (Fr., Long Lake, Minn.) was a pleasant surprise for Jeff Westlund tonight, as the freshman came off the bench to score 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while grabbing four rebounds.
Taylor Hall (Sr., Blaine, Minn.),
JD Robinson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.), and
Luke Buttenhoff (Jr., Watertown, Minn.) all got in the scoring mix as well, but it wasn't near enough in the end.
St. Thomas claimed a big advantage from bench points—outscoring BU 43 to 20—and points off turnovers. 18 Royal turnovers led to a 24-4 advantage for the Tommies.
Bethel will look to erase their memory from tonight's loss when it heads to Winona, Minn. Saturday to take on Saint Mary's University in men's and women's double header.
