Strong second half not enough in conference loss to Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS—Two-time MIAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week award-winner Taylor Hall continued his offensive dominance Monday night, but it wasn't enough as Bethel fell short to Augsburg College in Si Melby Hall 65-69. The Royals' (10-7, 6-6 MIAC) Hall finished the game with 27 points and nine rebounds—including three offensive, but the Auggies (14-3, 9-3 MIAC) held on to the very end to secure the four-point edge.

Bethel trailed by three points at the half, despite shooting just 36 percent, but an 11-6 run to start the second period gave the Royals the small advantage at the 14:21 point in the final frame. 17 lead changes in the second half displayed the balance between the two opponents, but a 13-7 run by the Auggies in the final 4:55 allowed Augsburg to control the rock in the end.

BU was great in many facets Monday night—outscoring the Auggies in second chance points (14-10), bench points (16-3), and points off turnovers (13-4). The Royals also outrebounded Augsburg 35-33 and held them to 26.7 percent from downtown, but Dan Kornbaum and the Auggies connected on 47.1 percent of its shots from the floor, which was just enough in the end. Kornbaum went 10-for-10 from the floor and 7-for-10 at the line for 27 points and 12 rebounds—matching Taylor Halls 27 and nine boards eye for eye.

The rest of the Royals' production was exceptionally balanced, as five players scored six points or more. Jared Nelson (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn.) shot 3-of-6 for eight points, while Derek Wolhowe (Jr., Motley, Minn.), Kyle Zimmerman (Jr., Champlin, Minn.), Quinn Gorski (Jr., Batavia, Ill.), and JD Robinson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) all scored six points on a combined 10-of-22 shooting.

Bethel ended the game shooting 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the free-throw line and 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from downtown, but it was the play down the stretch that gave the advantage to the hosting Auggies.

The Royals will look to rebound Wednesday night at home as they welcome Gustavus Adolphus College to the Robertson Center Gym for a MIAC matchup against the Gusties, who are in fourth place with a conference record of 7-5. Tipoff Wednesday night is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and both live stats and webcasts will be available here.
