ST. PAUL—Bethel's men's basketball team extended its win streak to three games with a dominant 70-32 win over Macalester Saturday afternoon at the Leonard Center. The Royals (10-6, 6-5 MIAC) held the Scots (4-12, 1-10 MIAC) to just 11 points at the half, and shot 50.9 percent on its way to the sixth conference victory of the season. BU now rests in the Top 6 within the conference standings—only two games behind second place.
Bethel utilized a balanced scoring attack in Saturday's matinee, as six players scored six points or more, while stifling Macalester so that no players scored double digits.
Taylor Hall (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) led all players with 13 points and five rebounds, while
Derek Wolhowe (Jr., Staples, Minn.) and
Quinn Gorski (Jr., Batavia, Ill.) scored 11 and 10, respectively.
Kyle Zimmerman (Jr., Champlin, Minn.) and
John DeCleene (Jr., De Pere, Wis.) also helped the Royals control the glass with nine and six rebounds, respectively—giving BU a 29-22 advantage in rebounds.
In addition to strong shooting and solid rebounding, Bethel was exceptional on defense. The Royals held Macalester to 26.1 percent shooting and forced the Scots into 20 turnovers. These 20 turnovers allowed BU to control the 26-6 advantage in points off turnovers and 34-16 point margin in points in the paint.
A sizeable lead for the Royals also allowed BU to outscore Macalester's bench 29-11, as 15 members of Bethel's squad touched the floor. In fact, 11 Royals scored in the conference matchup.
Bethel's next contest will be against Augsburg College in Minneapolis Monday night. The Auggies, who are second in the conference with an 8-3 league record, upset the Royals in early December with a 59-50 win at the Robertson Center Gym.
