ST. PAUL – Bethel's men's basketball team avenged Saturday's loss with a decisive 78-62 win over conference opponent Hamline University Monday night at Hutton Arena. The Royals (8-6, 4-5 MIAC) held the narrow 40-39 lead at intermission, but it was a strong defensive effort following the halftime break that held the Pipers (6-8, 3-6 MIAC) to 23 points in the second period and awarded BU its fourth conference win of the season.
Bethel took advantage of a 39-21 rebounding advantage in the MIAC contest, as five BU players tallied five or more rebounds. This allowed the Royals to outscore the Pipers 32-26 in points in the paint and 9-6 in second chance points. BU also utilized a 23-9 run late in the second half that gave them the momentum needed down the stretch.
The Royals ended the matchup with a strong shooting percentage, finishing the 40-minute affair with a 47.5 field goal mark on 29-of-61 shooting.
Taylor Hall (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) had a dominating performance, as the Blaine, Minn., native finished with 28 points on 13-of-19 shooting, 13 rebounds, and four assists.
Bjorn Westlund (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.) also added a spark off the bench, finishing the game with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting—including 3-of-3 from downtown in the first half. Westlund's trio of 3-pointers comprised 60 percent of Bethel's makes from beyond the 3-point arc, as
JD Robinson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) and
Aden Casey (Fr., Side Lake, Minn.) were the only other BU players to bury a 3-ball.
Kyle Zimmerman (Jr., Champlin, Minn.) ended the contest with 11 points, five boards, two blocks, and two steals. Meanwhile,
Aden Casey was the fourth player to score in double figures, tallying 10 points—on 2-of-3 shooting and 5-of-6 from the foul line—and three rebounds.
Bethel will continue its season Wednesday night, as the Royals welcome Concordia College-Moorhead to Arden Hills for a rematch of the first conference game of the season. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Cobbers defeated BU 73-65 and have gone on to post a 7-2 record in conference play.
