Royals Fall in Final Two Innings

Up 7-3, BU drops nonconference affair to Concordia College

BOX SCORE

ROCHESTER, Minn. –
After an opening weekend split in Rochester a week prior to Saturday, the Royals faced Concordia College (Moorhead) in a nonconference affair last Saturday, March 10 in Rochester, Minn. Despite rallying to a 7-3 lead after the fourth inning, BU surrendered five runs in the top of the sixth inning, leading to the 9-7 downfall. Unfortunately Bethel managed six blunders throughout the contest, which was one of the main contributions to the late-game rally for the Cobbers.

The Royals trailed 3-2 after 3.5 innings until Bethel dropped a bomb on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Cristina Masten (So., Fergus Falls, Minn.) started the inning by advancing to first base on a hit by pitch. Angie Jackson (Fr., Oakdale, Minn.) advanced Masten to third with a double, which was followed by a 4-3 putout scoring Masten. Kaylen Sorenson (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) then plated Jackson with a pinch-hit single, which was followed by a groundout and a Megan Matson (Jr., Mound, Minn.) single that scored a run. Matson, along with Alexandra Thunborg (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) scored later in the inning.

Concordia came back with five in the top of the sixth and one more in the top of the seventh to secure a 9-7 victory, which pushes Bethel back to 1-2 on the season.

The centerfielder Rachel Gilbert (Jr., Becker, Minn.) led BU for the day with three hits in four plate appearances and drove in two runs. Matson had an exceptional day at the plate as well, knocking two hits that scored one and helped her score twice.

Anja Erlandson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) struck out five and allowed just two walks throughout the seven innings she pitched.

The Royals will now travel to Clermont, Florida to compete against several teams from around the country in its annual spring break trip.
