Scouting St. Thomas: St. Thomas comes into tonight's battle riding a five-game win streak, which includes a 69-55 win over Bethel just over a week ago. The Tommies have lost just four conference games all season long, including both contests against the No. 5 seed Saint John's, a double-overtime loss to the No. 2 seed Gustavus, and a buzzer-beater to Bethel... UST's best player, Tommy Hannon, went down due to injury after the season's opening nine games after the senior was leading the squad with 16.9 points per game. Since then John Nance and Will DeBerg have stepped up to average over 12 points per contest... The Tommies average 74.5 points in any given competition, shooting 49 percent from the floor - including 39 percent from downtown... St. Thomas does an exceptional job getting to the free throw line, averaging just under 24 free shots per contest, while converting 74 percent of its shot attempts from the charity stripe... UST keeps its fans on its toes in the second half, as the Purple and Silver have given up one hundred more points in the second than in the first period. Yet the Tommies have also scored approximately 90 more points in the latter frame.
Scouting Bethel: The Royals enter tonight's contest with significant momentum on its side as BU has been victorious 10 times in the last 13 games. Bethel won two out of three games in the final week to achieve the No. 6 seed in the MIAC playoffs, yet slipped 69-55 to St. Thomas on February 15th. In its run down the stretch, BU captured two wins over Gustavus, a buzzer-beater win over St. Thomas, as well as wins against Saint John's, Hamline, Augsburg, and finally St. Olaf in the quarterfinal matchup of the conference tournament.
Taylor Hall (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) has been the on-the-court leader for the Royals averaging 16.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. He has received a vast amount of help from
Daniel Baah (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) and Kyle Zimmerman (So., Champlin, Minn.), who are each averaging double figures this season. Bethel averages approximately 68 points per game, shooting 46 percent from the court. Defense has been BU's strongest asset thus far, however, as the Royals have minimized its opponents to just 39 percent shooting. Bethel has also taken advantage of its play off the glass, as the BU front court has made a substantial effort to get multiple second chance points, while limiting its opponents to just one shot in each possession. The Royals average nearly 35 rebounds a game, which is almost three rebounds better than its opponents.
