MOOSE LAKE, Minn. – In their final NCAA game of 2012 the Bethel University men's hockey team allowed four third period goals to the Northland College Lumberjacks and lost 6-3. The Royals led after the second period 3-2 but saw the Lumberjacks score all four goals third period goals in the last nine minutes to record just their second win of the season. Bethel was outshot 16-5 in the decisive period after holding a 21-15 shot advantage after the first two periods. The contest was played at a neutral setting in Moose Lake, Minn. at Riverside Arena. A nice crowd was on hand to witness the game which helped raise funds for repairs to Riverside Arena which was damaged during the major flooding in the area this past spring.
The game started slowly with both teams feeling out each other and the surroundings before Northland got on the board first with over four minutes remaining in the first period on a power play goal. The Royals answered shortly after with a power play goal of their own by
Colin Mayer (Jr., Mound, Minn.). He was assisted by
Jack Paul (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Tyler Sorensen (Jr., Madison, Wis.). Just 44 seconds into the second period the Royals took the lead when
Dan Rowland (Sr., Boston, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season with the assist going to
Mitch Hughes (Fr., Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Five minutes later the Lumberjacks tied the game back up. Late in the period Hughes put the Royals back in front with his fourth goal of the season. Rowland and
Brock Raffaele (Fr., Cadillac, Mich.) assisted.
In the third period the Lumberjacks came out aggressive and owned the advantage in puck possession and shots before opening up a scoring barrage with 9:01 to play in the game. Northlands Nathan Brown scored a power play goal to tie the game, the a little over three minutes later put the Lumberjacks ahead 4-3. The Jacks scored again with 1:42 left before Brown completed the third period hat trick with an empty net goal after stealing the puck and breaking away with 39 seconds remaining.
Northland took advantage of both power play opportunities they were given while Bethel was 2-4.
Dan Harper (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) took the loss in the net for the Royals. He made 25 saves in the game.
The Royals fall to 6-7 overall on the season and will head into the semester break and prepare for a trip to Erzurum, Turkey. The team will be there from December 22-30 and will play at least three games against national teams from the region. Upon returning to the U.S. the Royals will play a pair of non-conference games on January 4-5 against UW-Stout and St. Thomas.
