ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The first place Bethel University men's hockey team is headed to Moose Lake, Minn. Friday evening for a non-conference battle with Northland College Friday night. The Royals and Lumberjacks will square off in Moose Lake's Riverside Arena, which sustained damage during the major floods this past spring which affected much of Minnesota's northeast region. All proceeds from the ticket sales along with a postgame spaghetti feed will go to support Riverside Arena flood repairs.
Bethel is coming off their second conference sweep of the season and sits in a tie for first place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) at 5-1 with St. Thomas. The Royals have swept Gustavus and Hamline while splitting with Concordia, who also handed St. Thomas their lone conference loss. MIAC play will not resume until the weekend of January 11-12. The Royals are the second highest team in the receiving votes category of the latest USCHO.com Top 15 poll.
Against Hamline, the Royals benefitted greatly from the return of junior
Garrett Windle (Downingtown, Penn.) who scored a pair of goals and had an assist in both games and was named the MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week. In just the second game of the season, Windle was injured in a very scary play in which he was hit from behind into the boards. He had been out since that time and was finally cleared to play against the Pipers and returned in style. Windle is tied for the league lead in goals scored in MIAC games despite playing in just two games and is tied for seventh in points. Senior
Jack Paul (Minnetonka, Minn.) is the Royals leading scorer with 13 points on the season and seven in MIAC play.
Northland College, from Ashland, Wisconsin and the Midwest Athletic Conference, comes into the game sporting a 1-7 record. Their lone win of the year came against Finlandia University and the Lumberjacks have been outscored 59-22 on the year. They are led by forwards Kraig Wright and Mike Lennon who have scored nine points each and freshman Mike Mikulan leads the Lumberjacks with five goals scored.
The puck will drop at 7 p.m. with a large crowd anticipated. Tickets have been sold in advance at $8 and will be available at the door for $10. Children 12 and under are $5 while free admission is being given to all Moose Lake Area Hockey Association skaters who are wearing their jersey.
