Free Throws Decisive in 59-50 Loss to Augsburg

Royals make 3-of-10 and fall short against visiting Auggies

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Augsburg's Tyler Schmidt rattled in a 3-pointer with time expiring on the shot clock and 0:16 remaining in the game that gave Augsburg just enough to top Bethel Monday night in conference play 59-50. The Royals (2-4, 0-3 MIAC) got an “and-one” from post player Kyle Zimmerman (Jr., Champlin, Minn.) to knot the game at 50-50, but the Auggies (6-0, 3-0 MIAC) got a long offensive rebound to result in a Schmidt jumper with time expiring on the shot clock to give Augsburg the 55-50 edge late in the game.

The Auggies game plan was clear throughout the night—simply to rattle Bethel's biggest threat Taylor Hall (Sr., Blaine, Minn.). This happened as Hall was only able to play 18 minutes—due to foul trouble—and score six points.

Many Royals stepped up, however, as it was Zimmerman who led the way with 13 points and nine rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting. Bjorn Westlund (Sr., Mounds View, Minn.) also buried three from downtown, adding nine points and two boards. Aden Casey (Fr., Side Lake, Minn.) also poured in eight points.

Bethel put on a strong effort, especially in the second half—making 48 percent of its field goals, yet BU made just 5-of-20 3-pointers and 3-of-10 free throw attempts. In the last two competitions, the Royals have made 3-of-15 free throws. Conversely, Augsburg completed 14-of-17 from the charity stripe, which may have proved to be the deciding favor in Monday's MIAC matchup.

In his 18 minutes played, Hall did have four blocked shots—adding to the team's total of six.

Augsburg's Dan Kornbaum led all players with 17 points and eight rebounds—all defensive.

The Royals will travel to St. Peter, Minn. Wednesday night to take on the Gusties in another conference game. Bethel will continue to look for its first MIAC victory, after being picked to finish fourth by the coaches in the preseason coaches poll. Augsburg was picked third. The Gusties are coming off of an 83-79 road win over St. Olaf Monday night.
