BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey teams winning streak came to a crashing halt Saturday afternoon in a 5-1 loss to Concordia College. After being the more physical team and taking nearly twice as many shots as the Cobbers on Friday the Royals were unable to keep Concordia in check Saturday. Concordia scored twice in the first period and three times in the third to pull away.
Brock Raffaele scored the Royals lone goal early in the third period to pull the Royals to within one but Concordia quickly answered with their third and fourth goals just 20 seconds apart.
“We just came out flat,” Royals head coach
Charlie Burggraf said. “The puck didn't bounce our way early and we got away from our game. The guys tried to battle through but then we let up a couple of soft goals and ran out of time. Good teams will learn from an experience like this and come back better. We have no excuses today, we just got beat.”
The Royals and Cobbers each spent significant time in the penalty box as Concordia had nine penalties for 18 minutes and Bethel had seven penalties for 17 minutes. Concordia scored their first goal on a power play and scored their fourth goal shorthanded. Concordia was 1-3 in 5:46 of power play time, while the Royals had plenty of opportunities, but were 0-4 in over ten minutes of power play time while also allowing the Cobbers to score a shorthanded goal.
The loss drops Bethel to 3-1 in MIAC play while Concordia improves to 2-2. The Royals will take a weekend off from MIAC play but will travel to face #16 Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday and Saturday in Milwaukee, Wis.
