WAVERLY, Iowa – Bethel finished the two-day tournament at Wartburg College Saturday with a 1-1 record after beating Gustavus Adolphus for the second time this season and losing to No. 24 Carthage College.

The 2 p.m. match against the Gusties ended a lot closer than the first time the two opponents faced one another head-to-head earlier this season. The dual went to five games, but the Royals prevailed 25-15, 17-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13. Bethel's offense hit .163 as a unit, with Nicole Ackatz (Jr., Elkhorn, Wis.) leading the way with 13 kills. Freshman Kali Johnson (Tacoma, Wash.) and Nicole Deberry (Libertyville, Ill.) each posted 11 kills as well, as Johnson hit .172 and Deberry averaged a .321 attacking percentage.

In addition, Caitie Helle (Sr., Onamia, Minn.) finished with eight kills, two aces, and had her hand in six blocks.

Cierra Nickel (So., Sanborn, Minn.) led all players with 39 assists and senior libero Val Smith (Alexandria, Minn.) posted the most digs (28) between the two MIAC competitors. Kali Johnson also had 13 digs.

The Royals were taken down in three while facing the Top 25 ranked Carthage College. The Lady Reds handed BU a 25-13, 25-23, 25-17 loss via a .281 team hitting performance – which included a 24-kill affair by Emily Heuermann.

Bethel was unable to get a player in double figures, as Ackatz managed just seven kills, while Helle, Amy Baumetz (Sr., Three Lakes, Wis.), and Deberry each had five.

Nickel tallied 15 assists for the Royals, while Smith composed 12 digs. BU finished with seven team blocks, led by Baumetz, who had a hand in six.

Following the two-day tournament, senior Val Smith was selected to the seven-player 2012 all tournament team.

With the Saturday split, Bethel now stands 14-8 overall and returns home for a MIAC matchup against Saint Mary's on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. Following the contest against the Cardinals, the Royals travel to Texas for a weekend tournament at Trinity University before finishing the final four conference matches of the season.
