ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College Gusties defeated the Bethel University men's soccer team 2-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match-up Friday afternoon at Gustavus. The Gusties, who are in a battle with St. Thomas for first place in the MIAC, controlled the ball throughout the game. Bethel managed two shots on goal and four total, while Gustavus had 21 shots and 12 on goal.
The Gusties scored both of their goals at the end of each period. The first goal was scored with 4:12 left in the first period and the second was scored with just 1:59 left in the game. Bethel Goalkeeper Chris Scott (Jr., Cedar, Minn.) made ten saves for the Royals.
"It was a very tough match today," said head coach Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "The weather was a major factor for both teams. The strong crosswind made it very difficult to find any sense of rhythm and pace. Gustavus is a good team and it was good to compete with them for much of the match. This year has been filled with many lessons. I am proud of the boys for continuing to work and grow and believe in one another."
The next game for the Royals will be Wednesday afternoon at home as they welcome the St. John's Johnnies for a 4 p.m. match at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
