ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's soccer team allowed a pair of goals early and a pair late in their contest with Saint John's University in a 5-0 loss at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex. On a nice, but chilly, fall afternoon the Royals saw streaks of good play but not enough sustained offense and defense to keep with the visiting Johnnies.
The Johnnies scored two early goals at the 12:07 and 17:47 marks. The Royals got off five shots in the first period but totaled six shots on the day with no individual player having more than one. Three of those shots ended up on goal. Saint John's scored again early in the second period at 54:37 and then tacked on two more down the stretch just 75 seconds apart. The Johnnies Ian Scudder scored three times while Michael Coborn had a goal and an assist. Saint John's had 17 shot attempts and put 10 on goal in the game.
"Credit to Saint John's," said Royals head coach Jeremy Iwaszkowiec. "They came out aggressive and hungry and simply out worked and out played us."
With the loss the Royals drop to 2-11 and 1-5 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Saint John's improved to 6-5-2 and 3-2-0 in the MIAC. The Royals will host Concordia College Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Cobbers are one spot ahead of the Royals in the MIAC standings at 2-4.
