Arden Hills, Minn. - Bethel played host to the St. Mary's Cardinals this Saturday at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex. The Royals were able to take both games from the Cardinals to improve their overall record to 14-8, and 5-1 in the MIAC. The wins help move Bethel into the 3rd spot in the conference rankings. The Cardinals were ranked 3rd in the pre-season coaches poll, one spot ahead of the 4th rank Royals.
Randi Thompson was the winning pitcher for Bethel in game 1. Thompson allowed only 1 run on 7 hits, while walking only 2. The win bring Thompson's season win/loss record to 4-2 with an era of 2.78. The Cardinal's Mallory Betzold was the lossing pitcher in game 1, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits while walking 3.
The Royals scored the bulk of their runs in the 3th inning, when they put 3 of their 4 runs on the board.
Megan Matson, and Steph Vosberg combined for 5 hits in the first game.
In the second game Bethel's Rebecca Akerson was credited with the win. Akerson pitched 5 innings allowing 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 2. To seal the victory junior
Genna Bock came in the final 2 innings to ear the save.
After being down 2 runs after the first 3 innings of play, the Royals bats got busy as they put up 3 runs in the 4th, and 4 runs in the 5th to win by a final of 7-4.
The Royals next action will come on Wednesday as they travel down Snelling avenue to take on the Scotts of Macalester. Game time is set for a 4 p.m. start.
