Vadnais Heights, Minn. - Jake Kogler (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.),
Jack Paul (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and the Bethel University offense fired two goals in the opening 70 seconds on its way to a 5-2 victory over Hamline Univeristy. The Royals win handed the Pipers its first MIAC loss of the 2011-12 season and improves BU's record to 2-3 within conference play.
Kogler constructed his first goal within 15 seconds of the opening period on a
Chris Fiala (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and
Tyler Swanson (Fr., Fargo, N.D.) delivery. The goal gave Kogler his fifth goal of the season and Fiala and Swanson their sixth and fourth assist, respectively.
Jack Paul increased the Royals early lead 55 seconds later with a shot that found a gap in the HU net, giving Bethel the 2-0 lead. Paul's goal came on an assist from
Garrett Windle (So., Downington, Pa.) and
Austin Hatch (Sr., Cloquet, Minn.). Windle assisted his second goal of the game and the season with 14 minutes remaining in the period when
Chaz Gerads (Sr., Blaine, Minn) manufactured his first goal of the season. Gerads' goal gave Swanson his second assist of the season.
With a 3-0 lead after the first period the Royals continued to execute immediately in the second when
Jake Kogler fired his second goal of the contest and sixth of the season, giving the 4-0 edge to BU. Kogler's goal came two minutes into the middle period and was set up by
Mason Swenson (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) and
Jack Paul. Hamline got on the board after 27 minutes of play when Zach Johnson fired his fourth goal of the year past the BU goalie. The Pipers cut the Bethel lead to two three minutes later when capitalizing on a power play opportunity that found a Corey Belisle shot in the net.
The Royals poise and determination eliminated any further thought of a Hamline comeback, however, as the BU defense shut out the Pipers in the remaining 23 minutes. Furthermore, Bethel maintained a high level of aggressiveness on offense, being capped off with a
Grant Dye (Fr., Anchorage, Alas.) goal in the third period, finalizing the game at 5-3.
Throughout Friday evenings showcase BU outshot the Pipers 35-30.
Garrett Windle took the reigns of team leader in shots, finishing with six total shots-on-goal.
Jake Kogler and
Jack Paul each delivered five, while
Colin Mayer (So., Mound, Minn.) contributed four.
Robby Brown (Fr., Battleboro, Vt.) was consistent in the MIAC match-up versus Hamline. Brown recorded 28 saves, including 12 in the third period.
